Day 3 and 4
Day three: we were off! We initially went to tour India's premier biotechnology firm Biocon. All of the students had a chance to tour the labs where Biocon produces insulin and monoclonal antibodies, the latter being a highly effective treatment for certain types of cancer. After the tour, one of Biocon's top officials gave up his Saturday to brief us on the history and advancements of the company. He also took time to answer any of the group’s questions about Biocon and biopharmaceuticals in general. Afterward, we rushed straight to the Bangalore airport to catch a flight to Kolkuta (Calcutta). We arrived in Kolkuta around 10:00 pm, and immediately left for our hotel, which was located in the middle of the city. Although not permitted off the premises at night, the hotel was a wonderful stay and catered to our every need.
Today, day four, was unanimously the most relaxing day so far. We spent the morning cruising down the Hoogly River eating delicious Indian food, dancing and talking with our Indian hosts, viewing Deepak’s bridge, and enjoying the scenery. Everyone caught plenty of sun and loved lounging on the boat, as well as visiting the calm of the Belur Math Temple. “It was amaaaaazing,” said Abby Hagler. Afterward, we took the speed tour of the Victoria Memorial – speedy mostly due to the hundreds of thousands of villagers bused into the Memorial for a government demonstration although, “Half of the people probably do not even know what they are demonstrating,” said Deepak. After that, we arrived safely at the IIT campus in Kharagpur for excellent hospitality, quick showers, and an introduction to the rest of our student hosts during a ceremonial dinner.
So far, the trip has been a wonderful combination of both new and old India. Every student has had the opportunity to experience the diversity that only India can offer.
